Surface Finish · Anodizing
Anodizing Type II (Dyed)
Color that cannot peel: dye locked inside the part’s own oxide layer.
Process specifications
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Process group | Anodizing |
| Coating thickness | 8–25 µm |
| Tolerance impact | Same as clear Type II: grows ~50% of coating thickness per surface; we machine pre-finish dimensions to compensate. Specify the finish at quote time so compensation enters the program. |
| Corrosion rating | 336 h salt spray (ASTM B117, per MIL-A-8625 Type II). |
| Appearance | Saturated black, red, blue, gold or custom tones; 6063 gives the clearest colors, 7075 trends warmer. Bead blasting first yields the premium consumer-electronics matte. |
⚠ Not suitable for
Exact color matching across different alloys in one assembly (tones shift visibly); surfaces requiring electrical conductivity; prolonged direct UV exposure for reds and golds (organic dyes fade — black and clear are the UV-stable choices).
Works on these materials
Conditional compatibility
- Aluminum 2024-T351
Copper-rich alloy dyes unevenly and corrodes faster at pores; clear Type II or chromate preferred.
- MIC-6 Cast Aluminum Plate
Cast porosity yields mottled color; functional clear coats only.
Typical applications
- Consumer electronics housings and bezels
- Color-coded assemblies and tooling
- Black optical components (stray-light control)
- Branded visible parts on machines and devices
