What slows this industry down
Heavy machinery parts fail at the interfaces, not in the middle. A pivot pin that is two hundredths oversize seizes in the bushing after the first wet season; one that is undersize hammers the bore oval within a thousand hours. That makes the fit class, the surface finish in the bearing area and the hardness after treatment the whole job — the outside profile is almost decoration. Aftermarket and retrofit orders arrive without drawings, as a worn sample and a request to "make it like this but better", which needs someone willing to measure and produce a print before quoting. And the parts are heavy and awkward: a 40 kg housing costs more to ship wrong than it did to cut, so first-article approval before batch release is not bureaucracy, it is freight insurance.

- What fit class should pivot pins and bushings be machined to?
- Specify the fit, not just diameters — typically H8/f7 running fits for greased pivots, tighter where side load fights slop. A pin two hundredths oversize seizes after the first wet season; undersize hammers the bore oval within a thousand hours. We inspect pins and bores as mating pairs when both are on the order.
- Can a worn part be reverse-engineered without a drawing?
- Yes — aftermarket and retrofit work often arrives as a worn sample and "make it like this but better". We measure, reconstruct nominal dimensions accounting for wear, produce a print for your approval, then machine to it. The print approval step is not optional: it is where "better" gets defined in numbers.
- Why insist on first-article approval before releasing a batch of heavy parts?
- Because a 40 kg housing costs more to ship back wrong than it cost to machine. FAI before batch release converts freight risk into one part's worth of schedule — on international heavy work that trade is arithmetic, not caution.
