What slows this industry down
A robotics BOM routinely carries 50–200 custom machined parts — and a design that changes monthly, so slow quoting costs more time than machining itself. Joint housings demand 0.01–0.02 mm concentricity on harmonic drive interfaces, which most general shops cannot hold reliably. Volumes are awkward: 1–5 prototypes one month, a 500-piece pilot the next, and few vendors price both well. And the full machined BOM is essentially the blueprint of your robot, so IP protection has to be structural, not a promise.

Questions robotics buyers ask
- What tolerance do harmonic drive interfaces on robot joints actually need?
- Concentricity of 0.01–0.02 mm on the bearing seats and register diameters is the working requirement for most harmonic and cycloidal interfaces. We machine joint housings in 7075 or 17-4 PH on 5-axis centres and inspect those features on CMM per part, not per batch.
- Can one supplier handle a robotics BOM of 50–200 machined parts?
- That is the exact case a factory network exists for: milling, turning, Swiss and EDM parts on one BOM get routed to plants by capability class, while quoting, inspection format and shipping stay with one contract. You do not reconcile three vendors when two parts fail to mate.
- How is robot design IP protected when parts are made in China?
- Files are encrypted and NDA-covered from upload. A partner plant receives only the drawings its own job needs — never the full BOM, which is effectively the blueprint of the robot — and onward sub-contracting without written approval is grounds for removal from the network.
